How to use your iPhone as a Wi-fi Hotspot

iPhone Wi-Fi

If you have a family, chances are, you’re sharing some sort of data plan with your iPhone. Most of the time that’s not a bad thing.  In fact, with minor free data increases our family currently shares 15 GB of data a month.  Most of the time the data is only shared between our three iPhones, but we also have an iPad under the same plan.  Add to that the ability to carry over used data each month, and we rarely approach our allotted limit.

With this in mind, sharing data with our iPad’s and laptops that our limited to internet access on Wi-fi only has helped on more than one occasion. All you have to do to share your data connection is to turn your iPhone into a Wi-fi hotspot–and here’s how.

Open the Settings App, and select Personal Hotspot. Turn the Personal Hotspot on to share your iPhone’s internet connection with other devices.  To keep your connection secure, you should set a password for your shared connection. That way when other devices see your iPhone as an available Wi-fi connection, they will be prompted to enter the password first.  This way you have complete control over what devices are using your data.

There are three different ways to share the connection

1> Using your Wi-fi connection.  If set-up, you will be prompted to enter the password after selecting the iPhone in the Wi-fi settings

2> Connect over Bluetooth.  Use this way to connect to your computer by pairing over Wi-fi and entering a code that is displayed on your computer during the pairing process.

3> Connect using a USB cord. Plug your iPhone into your computer using your lighting connector, and choose ‘iPhone” form the list of network services in your Settings.

Whichever way you choose to share your iPhone Wi-fi connection, you will know that there is an active sharing session engaged if there is a blue line across the top of your iPhone screen.  In addition, it will indicate how many devices are currently sharing that connection.  To stop sharing your Wi-fi signal tap on the blue line or open the Personal Hotspot Setting again and turn the Personal Hotspot to off.
